Reopening California's Schools: A California LAO Discussion on Digesting the 2020-21 State Budget

On June 15, 2020, the California Legislature passed its version of a state budget to meet its constitutionally required responsibility, acknowledging it was still negotiating with Gov. Gavin Newsom on how to close a projected $54 billion deficit created by the COVID-19 pandemic.

Legislative leaders have indicated that they believe a final agreement with the governor will be reached before the Legislature adjourns to summer recess and before the start of the new fiscal year on July 1.
