On June 29, 2020, Governor Gavin Newsom signed the 2020-21 State Budget to close a projected $54 billion deficit created by COVID-19.

As part of the final budget package, K-12 education will receive a significant portion of the state’s allocation of federal Coronavirus Relief Fund and federal Governor’s Emergency Education Relief Fund to address learning losses related to COVID-19 school closures, especially for students most heavily affected by them.

On June 15, 2020, the California Legislature passed its version of a state budget to meet its constitutionally required responsibility, acknowledging it was still negotiating with Gov. Gavin Newsom on how to close a projected $54 billion deficit created by the COVID-19 pandemic.

Legislative leaders have indicated that they believe a final agreement with the governor will be reached before the Legislature adjourns to summer recess and before the start of the new fiscal year on July 1.

To learn more, we invite you to listen in on this recorded session to hear Edgar Cabral, deputy legislative analyst with the California Legislative Analyst's Office, present:

 - The status of the state's economic condition,

 - Latest updates on the 2020-21 state budget process, and

 - Policy discussions and legislative changes regarding the reopening of schools this fall.

Also, CASBO's Governmental Relations team will present an overview on how you can get involved in education advocacy efforts.
